about

I wanted to write a Billy Joel style piano epic. I hope I succeeded.

lyrics

Harry was a man who loved his wife
He loved his kids and his work, and life was good
He provided for his family their daily bread
And he fit like a glove into the neighborhood
Until one day the boss man came
And said “Hey Harry it’s a cryin’ shame”
The workload has slowed considerably
And we gotta cut around the edges of the budget tree
Poor Harry got the axe and fell between the cracks

Harry went home and he told his wife
But she didn’t understand, “It’s not fair, you worked so hard”
He never missed a day in 21 years
Now he sits alone and scared in his backyard
He stood long in the unemployment line
‘till that dried up with no jobs to find
He looked and he looked ‘til his shoes wore through
Until his well ran dry, and all the bills were due
Poor Harry faced the facts and fell between the cracks

BRIDGE: He was runnin’ in the race
Until he got smacked in the face
They put him in his place with one fatal blow
He was racin’ with the clock
Tried to run, but they wouldn’t let him walk
Then they threw him another block, and they laid him low

Harry was never a religious man
But he started to pray when hope began to wither away
His self respect became a nervous wreck
And this confident man now had nothing to say
He tried to stay on top of things
But he just couldn’t fly, ‘cause he lost his wings
Every day was harder than the one gone by
No matter how he tried, he couldn’t look you in the eye
Poor Harry melted like wax and fell between the cracks

BRIDGE:

Harry was a man who did his best
To make the most of life, the life that was given him
It was always said that he would get ahead
Because he had the makings of a model citizen
But there’s nothing’ left to say, nothing’ left to do
So Harry hit the bars and had a drink or two
And he told himself what he already knew
That the dream was over and his middle class life was through
